Education and workforce

East Sussex benefits from a fantastic skills base and a pool of skilled labour in the manufacturing and service sectors.

There are strong links between education, academic and research organisations in the county, and with access to some of the UK’s finest universities and most talented people, East Sussex is home to pioneering academic research and development facilities.

Brighton University has a strong campus presence in Eastbourne and Hastings. The University has been awarded five National Teaching Fellowships in recognition of excellent teaching methods and achieved the highest possible outcome from the Quality Assurance Agency which reviews standards in higher education.

The University of Sussex is ranked 13 in the UK, 39 in Europe and 110 in the world in the 2013 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Over 90% of its research activity is rated as world leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised, confirming the University’s position among the leading research universities in the UK.

Both institutions work in close partnership with local businesses and employers to help prepare students for their future within local companies. This level of collaboration is also present between companies in East Sussex and Sussex Coast College in Hastings and Sussex Downs College, in Eastbourne, Newhaven and Lewes.

There are multiple business-led partnerships in East Sussex which generate growth and create new jobs. The South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) aims to remove barriers to business, maximising benefit from EU funding, strategic infrastructure and transport, enterprise zones and business engagement, and is making a tangible difference to businesses at a local level. Lewes District is within the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

Multiple funding streams are available to start ups and growing enterprises and East Sussex County Council’s plans to encourage further entrepreneurial growth in the county are set out in the county’s Economic Development Strategy.
